About this worksheet

Recognizing shapes is an important early geometry skill, and it also builds vocabulary that children use when describing the world around them. This kindergarten worksheet shows ten shapes, two each of circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. For each shape, children choose and circle the correct name from three word choices.

The shapes come in different sizes, and some are turned or tilted. That is on purpose. Young children often think a square is no longer a square once it is turned on its point, or that a triangle must always point up. Seeing shapes in different positions helps children understand that a shape's name depends on its sides and corners, not on how big it is or which way it faces.

How to use it: read the three choices aloud if your child is not yet reading independently, then talk about how they know. "It has three sides and three corners, so it is a triangle." "A square has four sides that are all the same length; a rectangle has two long sides and two short sides." Counting sides with a finger is a great habit.

The answer key circles each correct name. This worksheet supports Common Core standard K.G.A.2 (correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size). Afterward, go on a shape hunt around the house or classroom.
