About this worksheet
This first-grade worksheet gives children focused practice with addition facts whose sums are 10 or less. It contains 24 vertical problems, including a few with zero, so children see that adding zero leaves a number unchanged. Fluency with these facts frees up working memory for later skills such as two-digit addition, regrouping, and word problems.
How to use it: let your child solve the problems using any strategy that makes sense to them, such as counting on from the larger number, using fingers, drawing dots, or using a number line. Over time, encourage strategies like "make ten" (7 + 3), doubles (4 + 4), and doubles-plus-one (4 + 5). Once a child is accurate, you can time one row for fun to build speed, but accuracy and understanding should always come first.
The answer key on the second page lists every sum in the same order as the problems, so a parent or teacher can check work in under a minute. Review any missed facts together and practice them with objects or flash cards. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 1.OA.C.6 (add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10). It pairs well with our Subtraction Within 10 worksheet for practicing related fact families.
