About this worksheet

Handwriting practice builds the fine-motor skills and letter recognition that young readers and writers need. This kindergarten worksheet covers the first half of the alphabet, A through M. For each letter, your child sees a solid model of the uppercase and lowercase letter, followed by dotted letters to trace along a set of writing lines with a dashed midline, just like primary handwriting paper.

How to use it: sit beside your child and say the letter name and its most common sound as they trace. Point out the starting point at the top of each letter and encourage smooth strokes that stay between the lines. Tall letters such as b, d, h, k, and l reach the top line; short letters such as a, c, e, i, and m stay below the midline; and g and j drop below the baseline. Short, frequent sessions of five to ten minutes work better than long ones.

The answer key page shows each letter pair written neatly as a model for checking letter formation, size, and spacing. This worksheet supports Common Core standard L.K.1.a (print many upper- and lowercase letters). When your child finishes, invite them to find each letter in a favorite picture book.
