About this worksheet
Volume measures how much space a solid figure takes up. This fifth-grade worksheet shows eight rectangular prisms, each labeled with its length, width, and height in centimeters, inches, feet, or meters. Students find each volume using the formula V = length × width × height and write the answer in cubic units. The prisms are not drawn to scale, so students must use the labeled measurements.
Writing the correct unit matters. A box that is 4 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 2 cm high has a volume of 24 cubic centimeters, because it could be filled with 24 cubes that are each 1 centimeter on every side. Talking about unit cubes helps students understand why we multiply three measurements together and why the unit is cubic.
How to use it: before students use the formula, have them picture the bottom layer of cubes. The length times the width tells how many cubes fit in one layer, and the height tells how many layers are stacked up. This is why the formula is sometimes written as V = B × h, where B is the area of the base.
The answer key lists every volume with its cubic unit. This worksheet supports Common Core standards 5.MD.C.5.b (apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes) and 5.MD.C.3 (recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand unit cubes).
