About this worksheet

This second-grade worksheet gives targeted practice with two-digit addition that requires regrouping, often called "carrying." Every one of the 20 problems has a ones column that adds up to 10 or more, so students must trade ten ones for one ten. All sums are under 100, keeping the focus squarely on the regrouping step.

How to use it: have your child line up the tens and ones, add the ones first, and ask, "Do I have ten or more ones?" If so, they write the ones digit below and record a small 1 above the tens column to show the new ten. Then they add the tens, including the regrouped ten. For students who are still building understanding, base-ten blocks, bundled straws, or a quick sketch of tens (lines) and ones (dots) makes the trade visible. Estimating first (for example, 38 + 47 is about 40 + 50 = 90) helps children notice unreasonable answers.

The answer key on page two lists every sum so work can be checked quickly. If an answer is exactly ten too small, the student probably forgot to add the regrouped ten, which is the most common mistake. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 2.NBT.B.5 (fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value).
